High Charge Rate Generator

Posted on June 20, 2017December 1, 2020 by Paul Hoehne

The generator on my TO-30 is charging at 15 amps where previously it was charging at two. Is that normal or indicating a problem? It is possible you have a shorted cell in your battery which is making the voltage regulator think the battery is down, and kicking the generator into the high charge rate. MH-50 Coil Resister

Posted on June 11, 2017June 20, 2017 by Paul Hoehne

I am restoring a MH-50. Is it supposed to have a resister before the coil? Yes, your MH-50 should have a coil with an internal resistor. No external resistor. I suspect someone replaced the original coil with one that requires an external resistor. Your local NAPA dealer should have the correct coil, it is the Read more about MH-50 Coil Resister[…]

TO-35 Key Switch

Posted on June 8, 2017June 20, 2017 by Paul Hoehne

The key switch on my 1955 TO-35 does not seem to be working properly. The lights turn off, and the engine quits in the last position even after replacing the switch. What could be causing this? I’d check the wiring to the switch carefully. Keep in mind it is possible you have a bad switch; Read more about TO-35 Key Switch[…]

Starter Shims

Posted on May 10, 2017August 13, 2020 by Paul Hoehne

The starter I installed on my TO 20 whined with a thin metal to metal sound. I jack-legged about 0.40 inch of shims against the housing, and the whine stopped. Is this a sound procedure? I have never heard of having to shim Ferguson starters. I’m sure it has something to do with the quality Read more about Starter Shims[…]

Generator Pulley Nut

Posted on May 8, 2017May 8, 2017 by Paul Hoehne

The nut which holds the pulley onto the armature shaft of a Lucas generator on my 1947 Ferguson is missing. The threads appear to be 21/32 inch, 20 to the inch, but they don’t correspond to any thread tables. Do you know what the correct nut is? According to my parts books, the nut used Read more about Generator Pulley Nut[…]

Distributor Rebuild on a TO-30

Posted on April 23, 2017April 26, 2017 by Paul Hoehne

How much play should there be between the distributor drive gear, and the housing on a TO-30? The maximum clearance between the bottom of the distributor housing and the drive gear is 0.010″. If you are going to reset or replace the drive gear, you might as well rebuild the distributor. Steiner’s sell a rebuild Read more about Distributor Rebuild on a TO-30[…]

Starter for 1949 TO-20

Posted on January 30, 2017February 14, 2017 by Paul Hoehne

I bought an aftermarket starter for my 1949 TO-20, and it does not fit; what starter can I get to fit my tractor? Sadly, many of the replacement starters being sold will not fit the Z120 or Z129 engines in the TE/TO-20 and TO-30. These replacement starters will fit the later Z134 engine in the Read more about Starter for 1949 TO-20[…]

Posted on December 28, 2016December 28, 2016 by Paul Hoehne

What is the proper battery for the Ferguson F-40? The Ferguson 40 uses a group 24, 12 volt battery.  Massey Ferguson specified a battery with a Cold Cranking Amps rating of 380 amps at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and 300 amps at -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
