Gaskets to Use when Replacing Axle Seals and Bearings

I am replacing my axle seals and bearings. Should I use some kind of “form a gasket” where the bearing retainer meets the backing plate and between the backing plate and the axle housing, and between the shims? February 15, 2016.

Use a paper gasket between the axle bearing housing and the brake backing plate. Install the shims between the trumpet housing and the brake backing plate. No gasket sealer is needed between the shims or anywhere else.
Make sure the wheel bearings are packed with grease before installing the axles. Follow the procedure outlined in the shop manual and remove just enough shims so the opposite wheel or hub turns in the same direction when one hub is turned. Then re-install one shim at a time until the opposite wheel or hub turns in the opposite direction or stands still. The axle hub bolts should be tightened fully when these tests are made.
